OPPO Overtakes Samsung; Becomes World’s Best Selling Android Phone For Q1 2017

For many years, people have gotten used to seeing iPhone and Samsung as the top two players in the smart phone market. Though they work using different operating systems, these two massive phone manufacturing companies have always been head to head for the #1 spot. However, since Samsung faced a very explosive controversy regarding their phones last year an unexpected shift happened.  Because for the first time ever, Samsung has been overtaken by another android phone manufacturing company and that is in the form of Chinese tech giant, OPPO.

According to research group Strategy Analytics, iPhone remained to be the top dog in the smart phone market for the first quarter of 2017. The Apple-based company has two of the best selling smart phone units all over the world.  Their iPhone7 handset topped the list with 21.5 million units sold; it was then followed by iPhone7 plus with 17.4 million pieces sold. Oppo’s R9 unit came in third with 8.9 million copies sold during the first quarter. While Samsung placed 4th and 5th with their mid-range Galaxy J3 and J5 models. These two handsets from the Korean phone company managed to sell 6.1 million and 5 million units respectively.

The research group claims that though Samsung fell to the second place in the Android category, the impressive sales of their mid-range phones helped the tech giant to recover a bit from their Galaxy Note 7 snafu of 2016. They also noted that OPPO has strengthened its sales in other markets as well.  The phone company has retained its popularity in China despite fierce competition and has been doing exceptionally well in the Indian market.

The battle between OPPO and Samsung is still far from over. The former recently released their highly anticipated OPPO F3 selfie expert unit while the latter released their comeback bids Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 plus.
